November 29, 2006 Update

Architects Stephen Blatt and Joe Hemes, of Stephen Blatt Architects in Portland, updated SAD 46 residents on the revised concept design of the new K-8 school at a meeting Tuesday, November 28 in Dexter.

Highlights of the plan: "a mix of tradition and innovation."

The two-story school would incorporate the "neighborhood school" design concept with separate primary and middle school learning centers and entrances. Preliminary plans call for the facility to be heated with a wood chip boiler, with a back-up oil furnace. The two wings would be sited to maximize solar heating and lighting. The playing fields would accommodate two fall sports and two spring sports. Plans also allowed for expansion of the two classroom wings as well as expansion of the gym. An inward-sloping roof would cap the 119,000 square-foot structure. The estimated life span of the complex would be 60-70 years.

The next step in the process is state approval of the concept plan for the new school. This decision may come as early as next week. Once the concept plan is approved at the state level, the plan will go before local voters at a straw vote, tentatively scheduled for early next year. Two public hearings will precede this vote. A referendum vote on the project will likely be held in late February.

The updated concept drawings, unveiled at Tuesday's meeting, will be printed in an upcoming issue of The Gazette as soon as the plans are approved by the state board.    These plans will also be posted at the SAD 46 Technology Office next door to Tillson's on Main Street in Dexter and on this website in the next several days, as well as at other locations in the district.

If you would like to serve on any of the new school sub-committees or have a question about the project, please call the Superintendent's Office at 924-5262 or contact one of your local school board members.
