Dexter, Garland, Exeter and Ripley

Formed in 1966, SAD 46 is comprised of three towns (Dexter, Exeter and Garland) in southwestern Penobscot County and one town, (Ripley) in southeastern Somerset County. Students from another Somerset County town, Harmony, attend the high school on a tuition paid basis. Approximately 1050 students will attend one of the five schools in the district this fall.

The Tri-County Technical Center in Dexter is an important partner in our student's education providing high quality learning in a wide-range of subjects from culinary arts and computer design to auto mechanics and construction. Also, the Adult Education program offers a variety of courses for diplomas, GEDs, and enrichment studies for SAD 46 residents.

The district employs 96 professional staff and 87 support staff.  All professional staff have bachelor degrees and 26 percent have some form of advanced degree. 76% of the DRHS Class of 2006 will continue on with their post-secondary education by attending colleges or technical schools this fall. 10% of this class will be entering the military.

Our District's Vision The community is the heart of the SAD #46 system and the SAD #46 schools are the heart of the community. SAD 46 supports lifelong learning, a respectful and safe environment, and technology to facilitate learning necessary for the 21^st century. The Core Beliefs of SAD #46 represent the Goals of the District. SAD #46 believes that: Community support is essential-it is a shared responsibility between parents, students, school and community. Each student has the potential to learn and succeed. All students should be given an equal opportunity for an appropriate educaton. New K-8 School Building Project Mission Statement It is the intent of the SAD #46 Board of Directors to provide facilities for the students of the district that support their educational, social and physical needs.  It is important that the K-8 school provide a healthy, safe academic environment in which students can learn and staff can work.  Through broad community involvement, the SAD #46 Board of Directors will examine all available options to create a facility appropriate for K-8 education in the 21^st century.

On July 27, 2006, residents in SAD 46 voted overwhelmingly to locate the new K-8 school on the Fern Road in Dexter.      The cost to construct and furnish this school is estimated to be $29+ million with the vast majority of the cost borne by the state. Every effort is being made to limit the impact on local tax dollars.  Final local costs will be determined before the local referendum vote on the new school.

The two-story school will incorporate the "neighborhood school" design concept with separate primary and middle school learning centers.      A straw vote on the final Concept Design of the school will be held later this fall, followed by a referendum vote to proceed with the project, possibly in December or January. The new school will provide  an energy efficient complex  increased security  small "neighborhood" learning centers  modern classrooms and labs  facilities for art and music  seating for 350  new sports fields and gymnasium  up-to-date technology and library services  improved parking and traffic circulation
